Brief project description

Consortium programme»ODEONEnvironmentally, economically and socially responsible livestock farming«The text addresses the key challenges of transitioning to sustainable livestock farming by improving animal welfare and health, reducing environmental impacts, increasing farm economic efficiency, and adapting to climate change.

The programme unites research institutions, educational organisations, public services, consulting organisations and innovative farms into a comprehensive consortium, whose aim is to develop, test and implement innovative solutions into practice. Particular emphasis is placed on the digitalisation of processes in animal husbandry, the introduction of sensors and smart technologies, the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions, the improvement of microclimates in stables and the development of new traits for updating breeding programmes.

The programme will contribute to the development of sustainable technologies and practices in cattle, sheep and goat, pig, poultry and horse farming, and will strengthen the linkage between research, advisory services and education within the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS).

Programme objectives

  • To connect knowledge institutions within the AKIS system and complement knowledge, in accordance with the developmental and technological capacity needs of all partners, with an emphasis on end-users – farms.
  • With investments, to establish or upgrade pilot-demonstration infrastructure for the development, transfer, exchange and utilisation of knowledge.
  • Develop new knowledge with a focus on the needs of farmers and in line with identified knowledge gaps and strategic objectives from EU and national strategic documents.
  • To speed up the exchange and transfer of this knowledge to farmers and other stakeholders in the AKIS system.

Key activities

  • carrying out research and applied experiments in real breeding conditions,
  • establishment and use of databases for monitoring animal production, health and welfare, and for monitoring environmental indicators.,
  • development and testing of digital solutions (sensors, automation, smart systems),
  • demonstrations of good practices on farms,
  • Organisation of workshops, seminars and training modules for farmers, consultants, pupils and students

Sustainable and digital livestock farming for the future of Slovenia

The consortium programme directly contributes to Slovenia's and the EU's strategic goals for climate neutrality, improved animal welfare, biodiversity conservation, increased productivity, technological advancement, competitiveness, and Slovenia's food security. The project builds a cooperation model that will serve all agricultural holdings in Slovenia in the long term and accelerate the digital transformation and green transition of Slovenian agriculture.

The project is funded under intervention IRP38 Consortia of knowledge institutions in support of the transition of agriculture to green, digital and climate-neutrality from The Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan 2023–2027.
